You will need to upgrade on initial purchase to Standard economy because basic economy does not allow upgrades. The cost for standard economy is from $188rt. Standard economy includes pre-reserved seats and the ability to make changes for no $fee on both carriers. American waives the change fee for same day standby or confirmed seat changes. United allows you to do same day standby or changes for a $fee + fare difference. United includes a full-size carryon bag in its standard economy fare.
You can get a more premium economy experience on American and United. In the seat selection process you can purchase Main Cabin Extra on American or Economy Plus on United. This add-on will get you a bigger seat with more legroom. The cost add-on is variable depending on the specific flight and seat purchased. American also includes priority boarding and Free Alcoholic Drinks when you add-on Main Cabin Extra.
On United first class rates start as low as $406rt. This gets the most spacious seat with extra legroom and 2 free checked bags. You also get premium meals, snacks and drinks and you board first. You can select this fare on original booking.
AIRLINE CHANGE FEE WAIVERS

ON UNITED For tickets issued between April 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, customers will be permitted to change without paying a change fee and only pay an additional difference in fare.
